Operating with only a fragile majority, Greece's Syriza government is nevertheless pushing forward in 2019 with long-awaited plans to restructure and overhaul the country’s land-based and online gambling legislation.
As it seeks to end an uneasy period of temporary online licensing that has existed since 2011, the government is proposing to secure significant revenues from the sale of new licences and from taxation, although the limited scope of the new licences is proving controversial.
Two types of licences are available – to conduct online betting and to conduct other online games of chance. The Greek Ministry of Finance submitted its draft gambling regulations to the European Commission in January 2020 after being passed in the country’s parliament last October. The Greek government has reconsidered its plans to introduce double taxation on online gambling in the country. Earlier in the month, the country’s Ministry of Development and Investment revealed its plans to introduce tax hikes for the online gambling industry in the country.
The gaming unit of the tribe, based in Connecticut, was awarded the lone license on Monday by the Hellenic Gaming Commission (HGC). Mohegan has created a consortium with Greek construction firm. Gaming License Requirements A special commission (known as the Gambling Commission) monitors and regulates the online gambling business conduct, making sure the company is eligible for granting a gaming license and complies with codes of its practice.
